Winter Expedition 2015

The Lake District was the destination for this year's Winter Expedition. Leaving early in the morning on Saturday 14th February, we arrived at the bunkhouse in Scales (nr Threlkeld). A small group headed out in the minibus for some off-road cycling whilst the rest headed up Blencathra via Sharp Edge. The patches of ice and snow made the ridge a little precarious and we were glad to make it back to the bunkhouse in time for showers and a pub dinner.

The next morning we had breakfast on the 'terrace' before heading into the Borrowdale valley, parking at Stonethwaite and walking alongside Langstrath Beck. We eventually reached Allen Crags (785m) and Glaramara (783m) before heading down Thornythwaite Fell. Some snow and ice under foot, good visibility, cloudy but no rain or snow. The view of Great Gable was spectacular. The round trip was around 18km and about 800m height gain.
